Theatre Artist
Amanda Portreath was already an accomplished actress when she made her Broadway début in the musical adaptation of Zootopia. But, after that, the young black woman quickly rose to stardom as the lead singer of the critically acclaimed band Take That. The group’s compelling voices were quickly adopted by a global audience and its lead singer went on to become one of the most successful English-language acts of all time. Although Take That has long since disbanded, the star of its youth continues to inspire young black artists. What’s more, Take That alumni continue to attract offers for new projects, including opportunities to executive produce and write for television and film.
Model
Megan Hilty is one of the most successful models in the world, having won more than 100 awards since herlaunch as a 27-year-old model for Vogue Magazine in 2011. Vogue’s Style Festival at the time recognized Hilty as one of the “Most Influential Models of All Time.” The festival was organized by Spanish fashion magazine Elle, which also featured artiste/model Katya moldavskyi. Hilty quickly rose in demand, receiving offers for work as a model for major brands such as adidas, menswear giant adidas, and Under Armour. After a successful photoshoot for GQ Magazine in 2013, Hilty released her first solo album, Night World, in 2016. Her debut album went to gold and her brand new album is scheduled to arrive in 2020.
In addition to her modeling and fashion businesses, Hilty also appears in supporting roles in feature films and television shows as well as voice roles in Disney and Broadway shows. Her breakthrough performance as Braddock in Sir Anthony Hopkins’ Netflix adaptation The Deuce reached global audiences in 2017.
Singer/Songwriter
An artiste can either be a solo artiste or a group, like the Back to the Black reggae group Back to the Black. Both methods require an individual to compose and perform their own material, often along with other artistes. However, most often an artiste serves as the solo vocalist, although this can be done by a group as well. Vocalistess in the group are often accompanied by a keyboard, Hammond organ, or other instruments, to create a unique sound that can be very impressive without a vocalist.
Fashion Designer
If being a model or an artiste is what you want to do, then designing and building your own clothes is a fantastic way to get your feet wet. Thousands of young black women are entering the fashion industry each year thanks to rising demand and increasing interest from both public and private companies. The average black woman makes $2,821 per year as an independent designer living and working in the United States. And, with a decent chance of success, those earnings can rise to as much as $4 million per year upon release. However, for those who want to work in the fashion industry full time, the pay is often not high enough to support a family. Designer pay scales can vary greatly depending on the employer and the model, so recreating your own clothes can be a difficult and expensive project buxic.
## Film Actress
Amanda Gold was one of the most successful film producers and All-American Actress of the 50s in the ’50s and ’60s.
